Tomorrow is #GivingTuesday! We continue the countdown today with Adam Cobb’s story: A vibrant Purdue University student, Adam embodies the power of perseverance. Meeting him today, you would never guess that months ago, he was fighting for his life.

On March 1, Adam was struck by a car while crossing the street near Purdue’s campus. He remembers nothing of the accident, but the consequences were devastating: a traumatic brain injury ( #TBI ), multiple intercapsular hemorrhages, and little hope.

After 20 days in a coma, Adam began a long road back—first at the Rehabilitation Hospital of Indiana (RHI), where intensive therapy helped him walk again with minimal assistance. But Adam wasn’t content to stop there. Determined to push beyond expectations, he set his sights on returning to Purdue. Unfortunately, like many neurological injury survivors, his insurance-covered PT visits ran out just as he was making major progress.

Thanks to the donors and supporters that make our extended care programs possible, Adam found the bridge he needed to continue therapy at the DRIVEN NeuroRecovery Center powered by NeuroHope during the critical months after his injury. Here, he’s been working tirelessly toward his goals. One milestone has been especially meaningful: relearning to dribble a basketball. “At first, I couldn’t dribble at all,” Adam said. “And now I can do over 100 dribbles!” For a right-handed player recovering from a left-side brain injury, this achievement reflects extraordinary dedication.

Today, Adam is back on campus part-time, and his work at NeuroHope continues!

Two days until #GIVINGTUESDAY , the nation’s biggest fundraising day of the year - today we highlight Kera Gray’s story:

In November 2024, what seemed like a few days of illness turned into a life-or-death battle. Her organs began shutting down, and she was rushed to the hospital. Her heart, lungs, and kidneys were failing, so she was placed on life support and put into a medically induced coma. While machines kept her alive, her spinal cord lost blood flow, leading to a spinal infarction — a spinal stroke.

When she finally woke up, she couldn’t move or feel her legs. But she could still feel gratitude — for life, for a second chance, and for the strength she didn’t yet know she had.

After months in the hospital and inpatient rehab, Shirkera returned home determined to fight for more. Her insurance had run out, but her willpower hadn’t. That’s when she discovered the DRIVEN NeuroRecovery Center Powered by NeuroHope — a place where hope meets hard work.

Since starting therapy in April, she’s made remarkable progress — from no movement at all to lifting, kicking, and regaining control in both legs. Every inch of progress has been earned through grit and grace.

After Black Friday - don’t forget about GIVING TUESDAY! FOUR DAYS AWAY! Over the next few days, we’ll be highlighting several inspiring journeys leading up to the big day!

Today we feature Patricia Harris, whose life changed in December 2023, when she fell off of a ladder at home .
At first, she didn’t realize the full extent of her injury. She wasn’t paralyzed — she just noticed it was difficult to walk.
‘
By August 2024, her condition was getting worse, she underwent spinal surgery, and woke up paralyzed. Her recovery journey since then has been one of remarkable determination.

After a difficult hospital stay and a brief rehabilitation experience, she arrived at the DRIVEN NeuroRecovery Center powered by NeuroHope in a power wheelchair unsure of what to expect - today she’s back on her feet gaining strength and recovery continues!

MUCH to be Thankful for as holiday season begins! Thanks to @sam.schmidt_ and @conquerparalysisnow , we celebrate our first calendar year in the beautiful new DRIVEN NeuroRecovery Center!

Other Major funding from the @orthoindy Foundation, the Emily Hunt Foundation, United Way, Anthem, and our loyal supporters has grown our physical, occupational, and speech therapy programs and expanded our adaptive fitness programs to serve more than 300 people (the most ever in a given year), and helped the 700th patient in our history!

Additionally, a two year study with @uindy and Indiana CTSI found that participants in our programs are 50% less likely to be re-admitted to the hospital after injury, showcasing the impact our work has on the health and quality of life of people living with neurologic conditions.

It’s all possible thanks to the community that believes in our work to better the lives of those living with paralysis.

1.3 TONS of generosity this #Thanksgiving!! That’s the final count in weight from the #fooddrive organized by our own Alexis Coleman and team - rallying the patient community together to help families in need.

Care packages were made available to anyone feeling a financial squeeze this season , with all leftovers donated to Living Water Fellowship church in Indianapolis.

November is National Caregiver Month! As we head into Thanksgiving, let’s honor the unsung heroes who travel the same turbulent road as the injured after life changing events.

From spouses and parents to partners and friends — your strength, love, and dedication are often the foundation that holds it all together. You are appreciated!

Caregivers are always welcome at our monthly WARRIOR SPIRITS Caregiver Support meeting : 1:00 PM on the THIRD Friday of every month at the clinic!

Unveiling ARC-EX Transcutaneous Spinal Stimulation at DRIVEN NeuroRecovery Center powered by NeuroHope!

The ARC-EX by @onwdempowered is the first FDA cleared device for non-surgical spinal cord stimulation.

This form of Transcutaneous spinal stimulation (TSS), differs from traditional Neuromuscular electrical stimulation (NMES) in several ways :

1. Electrodes are placed on the spinal cord , above and below the injury level, instead of on the muscle.

2. The electrical parameters (pulse width , milliamps) differ, with a goal to help activate the central nervous system.

3. The delivery of the stimulation is constant , rather than sequenced “on and off” activation of the muscles / peripheral nerves.

The goal of this form of stimulation is to help signals from the brain cross the injury level to assist with voluntary movement.

Since our founding, we have pushed to ensure that the best resources in neuro recovery are accessible to the people that need them. This form of stimulation may not be appropriate for everyone, but we are thrilled to add this research based, cutting edge intervention to our services at NeuroHope.

Carrine’s recovery continues! An UNASSISTED stride across the @hydroworx pool made our day! To fully appreciate her journey, understand where she started:

Five years ago, an elite athlete on the @franklincollegegrizzlies basketball team, @rin._elizabeth_ ‘s life was put on a new path when she was struck by an impaired driver while she was on a motorcycle.

Carrine was not expected to survive the traumatic brain injury she sustained, let alone move, speak, or walk.

Since that day, Carinne, and her faith, family, and army of supporters have persevered through rigorous therapy at multiple facilities - most especially through the help of her trainer Courtney and @competetrainingacademy. Her family set up an entire gym in their rural Indiana home, and she started making the trip south to NeuroHope for additional support in 2023.

Her progress continues, thanks to her determination, and all the amazing people in her corner.

If you hear an infectious laugh radiating through the clinic - you know she’s near!

Keep pushing Carinne! You’re not done yet!

Final #PTMonth shout out! Meet Lydia Miner, PTA! If you’ve ever been to a NeuroHope First Friday or Caregiver event, you’ve felt her influence — because it’s Lydia’s heart and light that help make those moments happen. She’s the “good, good energy” behind so many of the experiences that bring our community together!

Lydia has a rare gift for creating spaces where people feel safe, supported, and encouraged to try something new. She’s the calm in the chaos, the smile that brightens the room, and the reminder that healing isn’t just physical; it’s emotional, social, and deeply human.

Lydia recently celebrated 5 years on the NeuroHope team! After earning her Exercise Science and Physical Therapist Assistant degrees from the University of Indianapolis, Lydia joined our staff in 2020.

What started as an internship quickly became a calling. Her dedication to helping people with neurological conditions move, grow, and thrive shines through in everything she does.

Lydia’s superpower isn’t just making patients feel comfortable; it’s making them feel seen. A free spirit with a heart for helping others rediscover their strength and joy, Lydia reminds us every day what community truly means.

When she’s not at NeuroHope, you’ll likely find her doing yoga, exploring local coffee shops, or spending time with her wife and their five furry companions – cats Levi, Lincoln, Leo, and their dog Ollie.

#PTMonth shout outs continue! If you’ve ever had a session with Marshall Sparenberg, PTA, you know he’s part coach, part problem-solver, and part comedian when you need one most.

Whether he’s talking golf swings, glute muscles, or the Purdue Boilermakers, his calm energy and sharp eye for movement keep patients motivated and progressing one rep at a time.

Marshall’s journey with NeuroHope started long before most realize — as an undergraduate intern in 2017! It didn’t take long for his passion for neuro rehab to click. After earning his degree in Exercise Science from the University of Indianapolis, he officially joined the team in 2018 and later became a licensed PTA in 2022.
Now he’s one of the most experienced and respected clinicians on our floor, with knowledge that runs deep in everything from biomechanics to patient psychology—and care that runs even deeper.

Marshall believes progress isn’t always a straight line, which is exactly why he stays with each person through every plateau and breakthrough.

When asked about his favorite muscle to train, his answer says it all: the gluteus medius — “the quiet hero” of balance and stability. Just like that muscle, Marshall works behind the scenes making sure every patient has the strength and support they need to keep moving forward.

Marshall embodies what makes NeuroHope special — knowledge, heart, and a relentless belief in the people he helps. He doesn’t need the spotlight to shine, but we’re making sure he knows just how much he means to us. Thank you Marshall!

#PTMonth Spotlight! Quiet strength. Steady encouragement. Thoughtful care. That’s Ali Peters, PT, DPT!

As one of our expert neuro physical therapists, Ali brings a calm confidence to every session — the kind that makes patients feel supported, challenged, and understood. Whether she’s helping a child celebrate a new milestone or guiding an adult through a tough recovery day, Ali has a special way of connecting with each person she works with.

Ali earned her Doctorate of Physical Therapy from Indiana University after completing her Bachelor’s degree in Biology at Valparaiso University. Before joining NeuroHope in 2023, she worked in inpatient rehabilitation, where she discovered her passion for neurologic recovery and helping people rebuild their lives after life-changing injuries and illnesses.

She’s certified in LSVT BIG, a treatment program designed to help individuals with Parkinson’s disease improve movement and function through high-effort, purposeful motion.

“When people walk into NeuroHope,” she says, “I hope they feel encouraged by our team and inspired by all the other clients working hard and typically having fun while doing it!”

Outside the clinic, Ali enjoys walking and jogging along the Monon Trail, rollerblading, baking, and spending time with family, friends, and her sweet cat, Bowie.

We’re so thankful for Ali’s spirit, her quiet determination, and the way she helps every patient believe in what’s possible again!

#PTMONTH rolls on - Today we celebrate Brittanie Helgeson PT, DPT! When it comes to care, compassion, and clinical skill - Brittanie has it all. Her patients love her calm energy, her ability to listen, and her constant drive to help them reach their goals.

Brittanie joined the NeuroHope team in 2021, but began her journey with a Bachelor’s degree in Biology before earning her Doctorate of Physical Therapy from Trine University. During graduate school, she discovered her passion for the neurologic population, drawn to the complexity of each case and the incredible people behind them.

She is LSVT certified, a specialized treatment program designed to help individuals with Parkinson’s disease improve movement and function. She continues to expand her knowledge to better serve her patients and is currently in training to become dry needling certified as well.

When she’s not in the clinic, Brittanie enjoys spending time with family and friends, music, reading, and golfing.

We’re grateful for Brittanie’s heart, dedication, and commitment to staying on the cutting edge of neurological recovery..

It’s National Physical Therapy Month! We’re recognizing our incredible team of PTs and PTA’s with posts this month - starting with our Clinical Director, Elliot Cohee (PT, DPT, NCS), whose passion for neuro recovery inspires us every day.

Elliot’s journey into PT began with his own high school injury, and he’s never looked back. From helping people in acute rehab relearn how to walk, to now leading the NeuroHope clinical team of PTs, OTs, SLP, and kinesiologists, Elliot is dedicated to empowering patients to achieve new goals, no matter how many years have passed since their injury.

We are grateful for Elliot and ALL of our PT staff who bring energy, expertise, and hope to our community every single day.
